Code for Sustainable Homes - Frequently Asked Questions

Launched by the government in 2007 the Code for Sustainable Homes replaces EcoHomes as the national standard to be used in the design and construction of new homes in England.

The Code is a set of sustainable design principles covering performance in 9 key areas: Energy & CO2 emissions, Water, Materials, Surface Water Run-off, Waste, Pollution, Health & Wellbeing, Management and Ecology.

The Code uses a rating system of one to six stars and involves a Design Stage Report and a Post Construction Report which is submitted to The Building Research Establishment to provide a final Code certificate.

Formal assessment of dwellings can only be carried out by suitably qualified, licensed and registered Code Assessors.

Developers wanting to lead the field in sustainable development will want to have their developments assessed under the Code to achieve as high a Code rating as possible.

Air Leakage Testing & SAP ratings are an important part of the Code for Sustainable Homes and therefore we are ideally placed to provide forward thinking builders, developers and architects with a full environmental service.
